The 2003 - 2004 school year marked the first year for Alternative and Education at Lawton Community Schools. This program was designed to give students who havenot been successful in the traditional high school and community members interested in high school an opportunity to graduate by completing an individualized, computerassisted program.Students complete a series of competency based courses, covering all areas required by the state for a diploma.

The program has seen much growth from its first six students and several graduates.  In 2010 - 2011 the program underwent voluntary restructuring and the name was subsequently changed to Lawton Accelerated Academic Center, LAAC. The Center has three programs.

A program for students who are less than 20 years of age by September 1 of the current school year, the high school program offers students the ability to be self-paced, focus on academics, and excel or get back on track.  In addition to academics, students may participate in daily seminar classes as well as a physical education program.

Adult Education:
Adult education is also offered free of charge for any individual 20 years of age or older who has not earned a high school diploma. They also take advantage of the individualized, computer assisted program used by the Academic High School Program.  Adult Education also includes a GED preparation program for interested individuals. The lab is open for adults after 3 PM.

Credit Recovery:
Credit recovery is offered to Lawton High School students who are generally on track for graduation but may need to “recover” a class or credit to earn a Michigan Merit Diploma.  Classes are self-placed and students come on a schedule they determine in conjunction with the high school principal and/or guidance counselor.
