Ed Hero

Congratulations to Diana Michalski and Amanda Maurer for being the 2026 Educational Hero Award Winners for Lawton Community Schools. They were celebrated at the Van Buren County ISD banquet on March 10, 2026.

Amanda Maurer:

Amanda Maurer is a Science Teacher at Lawton Middle School. Amanda routinely goes above and beyond for all of her students, and has a spot in her heart for the kids that need a little more. She does exceptional work with students receiving special education services in her science classroom, and is an outstanding advocate for this group of students. No one is left unseen in her room. If you are struggling with a concept or work completion she will be right by your side. She doesn't just make sure students finish; She makes sure they understand the concepts to the best of their ability. The nomination included “it means the world to me to know that there is someone like her out there teaching, sharing her enormous heart, and making sure those who are so often left behind receive the education and respect they truly deserve.”

Diana Michalski:

Diana Michalski has made a lasting impact on the quality of education in our school district through her unwavering commitment to students. As a special education paraprofessional, she supports students across multiple classrooms and academic areas. Her strong content knowledge, consistency, and reliability make her an essential part of student success. What truly sets Diana apart is her long-term dedication to students. She often supports the same students throughout all four years of high school, building strong relationships while maintaining high expectations and academic rigor. Many students report that they would not have earned a diploma without Mrs. M’s support. Diana strikes a rare and meaningful balance between providing appropriate support and fostering student independence. Students quickly learn that she takes their classes seriously and does not lower expectations. While she may seem strict at first, students come to understand that if they are willing to work for themselves, Mrs. M will work even harder for them. With more than 30 years of experience working with young people, both in and outside of school, Diana brings a level of care and commitment that is rare. Through her consistency, high expectations, and genuine care, Diana makes an educational difference that stays with students long after they graduate.
